How long does ceramic coating last?

A professionally applied ceramic coating typically lasts 3-5 years with proper maintenance. Unlike wax (which lasts weeks) or sealants (which last months), ceramic forms a semi-permanent bond with your clear coat that cannot be washed off. Longevity depends on maintenance. A pH-neutral wash every 2-3 weeks and avoiding harsh chemicals will maximize the coating's life.

Does ceramic coating prevent scratches?

Accepted Answer

Ceramic coating adds hardness to your clear coat (typically rated 9H on the pencil hardness scale) and provides significant scratch resistance against light swirls from car washes and everyday contact. However, it is not scratch-proof, and nothing stops a key or deep marring. It does make the paint much harder to scratch and easier to clean, and swirl marks that would normally embed in your clear coat wipe off a coated surface.

Is paint correction required before ceramic coating?

Not always required, but strongly recommended if your paint has any swirl marks, scratches, or water spot etching. Ceramic coating locks in whatever condition your paint is in, so if you coat over swirls, those swirls are now permanently sealed under the coating. We inspect every vehicle before quoting and will tell you honestly whether correction is needed.

What is the difference between single and dual stage correction?

Accepted Answer

Single stage uses one polishing compound to cut and refine in one pass, removing roughly 60-70% of paint defects. It is faster and more affordable, ideal for daily drivers with moderate swirling. Dual stage uses a more aggressive cutting compound followed by a finishing polish to remove 85-95% of defects. It takes more time but produces a much deeper, more reflective finish.

How long does the job take?

Ceramic coating alone takes approximately 2-3.5 hours of work time plus a 24-hour cure, during which the vehicle must remain dry. Adding single stage correction adds 3-4.5 hours of prep time. Dual stage correction adds 4-5.5 hours. We typically have correction + coating vehicles in for two days to do the job properly without rushing. All times are estimates based on average conditions.

Can you ceramic coat a brand new car?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and new vehicles are actually ideal candidates. Even brand new cars come from the factory with light transport scratches and dealer swirls from improper washing. Coating a new vehicle locks in that paint in its best possible state and provides long-term protection against Ontario winters, road salt, and UV damage right from the start.

How do I maintain a ceramic coated vehicle?

Use a pH-neutral car wash soap, wash every 2-3 weeks, avoid automated car washes with abrasive brushes, dry properly to prevent water spot etching, and apply a ceramic-compatible topper once or twice per year to maintain hydrophobic performance. We walk every customer through the maintenance process before they pick up their vehicle.
