If you've been quoted anything from $200 to $4,000 for ceramic, the price spread isn't margin. It's a different product class at each step. Tier 1 is a ceramic spray, roughly $200 to $325, a liquid SiO2 or graphene product applied by hand after a wash. It sits on top of the clear coat, doesn't chemically bond, and gets washed away gradually by rain and detergent. Real-world durability on an Ontario daily driver is 2 to 6 months even when the bottle claims a year or more. Tier 2 is a single-layer professional coating, roughly $450 to $550, a real bonded install with a typical 6-month warranty that gets sold conversationally as lasting about a year. With regular pH-neutral washes, 9 to 14 months is realistic. Tier 3 is the multi-year professional coating, roughly $400 to $1,000, engineered for duration: real chemical bond, harder cure, longer-rated formula, warranties from 2 to 5 years. That's where our ceramic sits, 3 to 5 year protection applied panel by panel with a 24-hour shop cure. Tier 4 is multi-layer, $1,500 and up, stacked layers with correction prep on every panel and a 5-to-10-year or lifetime warranty. We sit at Tier 3 by design. Tier 1 solves a real problem at a low budget, but it isn't what most customers are picturing when they ask for ceramic, and Tier 4 is excellent work priced for a different use case than a daily driver in Bowmanville.
A bond is not the same as a coat. A real ceramic coating goes through a chemical reaction with the clear coat as it cures, cross-linking into a covalent bond, and that bond is what makes it semi-permanent. A spray sits on top held there by surface tension. The first one stays put when you wash it. The second one gradually washes off. Hardness ratings measure abrasion, not duration: the 9H pencil rating on every ceramic product page describes how hard the cured film is, not how long it survives, and a 9H spray and a 9H multi-year coating can post the same number. Duration comes from bond strength, cured thickness, and UV resistance, and hardness is just the easiest of those to print on a label. UV and salt break coatings down faster here than in the lab, because manufacturer claims are tested with pH-neutral washes, garage parking, and no winter brine, which is the opposite of an Ontario daily driver on every count. Expect less than the rated duration if the vehicle is washed regularly with proper soap, and a lot less if it goes through automatic brushes or gas-station pressure washers. That is the honest math behind a coating sold as five years looking great at year three and wanting a topper by year four. And a topper extends, it doesn't replace: applied once or twice a year it refreshes the hydrophobic surface, but it adds no bonded layer and it will not bring back a coating that has already broken down.
Six signals tell you which tier a quote is actually in, whatever the packaging says. If the install takes under an hour, it's a spray, because clay-bar decontamination plus panel-by-panel application plus a controlled cure is 2 to 3.5 hours minimum on a clean car. If you can drive it away same-day in the wet, it's a spray or a sealant, because bonded coatings need 24 hours out of the rain to cure and manufacturers keep their warranties by curing indoors before exposure. If the warranty is shorter than the duration claim, trust the warranty, because that's the number they'll stand behind: five years claimed against a six-month warranty means six months is what anyone is comfortable backing. If they call it ceramic-based rather than ceramic, it's a wax or sealant using ceramic chemistry as an ingredient, which is a different product class at a different price, and both can be the right call for different vehicles. If correction never comes up in the conversation, your existing swirls and water-spot etching are about to be sealed in permanently, and a shop quoting ceramic without examining your paint in good lighting is either selling a spray or skipping the prep. And if you're choosing between tiers yourself, the two honest questions are how long you're keeping the vehicle and how you wash it. Sold in 12 months and washed at the gas station is a Tier 1 spray. Kept 3 to 5 years and hand-washed is Tier 3. Kept indefinitely and detailed regularly is Tier 4. It depends on your time horizon and your habits, not on the shop's preferred product margin.

The detailing done (interior and exterior) was absolutely flawless. I've never received such wonderful, friendly service. My car was previously smoked in, and it's impossible to tell. Windows, mats, leather seats, cloth interiors were all immaculate.
