Two products, one appointment, and both of them are oils

A full Rust Check here is two separate applications. The first is a creeping rust inhibitor, a thin penetrating oil sprayed into the places that actually rot: door cavities, rocker panels, pinch welds, frame seams, hood and trunk channels, fender lips. It goes in through factory drain holes and through small access holes where the factory left none, and it creeps along the metal the way water and salt do, displacing moisture and leaving an oil film behind on surfaces nobody can reach with a brush. The second is Coat & Protect, a much thicker oil-based undercoat sprayed across the exposed underbody: wheel wells, frame rails, suspension components, the underside itself. It never fully dries, so it stays flexible and stays in contact with the metal instead of cracking away from it. It is deliberately not applied inside door cavities, because a thick product in there clogs the drain holes the manufacturer put in on purpose. The second step is included free with every full Rust Check, which is not the industry norm.

Why we will not sell you a rubberized undercoating

Rubberized and asphalt-based undercoatings look like the more serious product. They spray on thick, dry to a hard shell, and the vehicle comes back looking armoured. The problem is what a Canadian winter does to that shell: it cracks. Once it has, moisture and salt work in behind it, and then they sit against bare metal under a coating that seals them in and stops them drying out. That is worse than leaving the underbody alone, and you cannot see it happening, because from underneath the shell still looks intact. An oil-based undercoat has the opposite failure mode. It never hardens, so it cannot crack, and where it thins out it thins out visibly. We do not offer the rubberized version on any vehicle at any price, and that has been the position since 2009.

Annual, and why each year is worth more than the last

The oil protects by staying mobile, and the same property means it migrates and gradually washes off exposed surfaces across a season of driving. So it gets redone every year. What people underestimate is the accumulation: each application adds to what is already sitting in the cavities and seams, so a vehicle on its fifth consecutive year carries far more protection in the places that matter than one being treated for the first time. It also means the first year on a neglected older vehicle is the least impressive year, and we would rather say that up front. Access holes are drilled once, plugged with rubber grommets, and reused on every annual visit afterward, so the one-time drill charge really is one time.

Timing, and what happens in the days after

September through November is the window that matters, because the protection wants to be in place before the first heavy salt rather than applied over a winter of accumulated brine. We do apply year-round, and a February treatment beats no treatment, but two things change outside the fall: Coat & Protect needs temperatures above freezing to lay down properly, and a vehicle arriving mid-winter needs its underbody genuinely clean first, since spraying oil over packed salt seals the salt in. Afterward, expect the vehicle to drip for one to three days as the oil settles out of the cavities and seams. Park on the street or over a tarp rather than a clean garage floor, expect a smell for a few days that fades, and keep a pressure washer off the underbody for a couple of weeks, because that is the fastest way to remove what you just paid for.
