Rust Check vs Krown: What We Actually See in the Bay
If you search "Rust Check vs Krown" you'll find a lot of content, most of it written by someone trying to sell you one or the other. Some tests put Krown slightly ahead. Some put Corrosion Free ahead of both. Rust Check's own content says Rust Check wins. Krown's says Krown wins. Forum threads mostly end with "just pick a good shop and go every year."
That last part is actually the most honest thing on the internet about this topic.
At Ultimate Detail & Rust Check in Bowmanville, we see the undersides of a lot of vehicles. We know where rust starts on a 2018 F-150 versus a Honda CR-V. We know which seams get missed when someone rushes, which areas wash away fastest from highway spray, and which spots on a truck frame are rusting on almost every vehicle that comes in after five Ontario winters without protection.
We're a Rust Check shop. But here's what we'll actually tell you.
What the Research Actually Shows
Independent tests and comparison articles don't hand Rust Check a unanimous win. In fact, some consumer-focused reviews rank Krown ahead of Rust Check for rust inhibition, and a few put a third product, Corrosion Free, ahead of both when tested in controlled conditions.
What most neutral sources agree on is this: Rust Check and Krown are both serious, Canadian-made products that perform well compared to doing nothing. The gap between them in testing is not dramatic. And the factors that aren't captured in lab tests (how thoroughly a technician treats your specific vehicle, whether they know the problem areas for your make and model, and whether you actually come back every year) have more real-world impact than which product is in the tank.
We're not going to pretend that's not true just because it doesn't make for a clean marketing headline.
So Why Did We Choose Rust Check?
Because when we see vehicles that have been treated annually, with either product, at a shop that cares, they look dramatically better than vehicles that haven't been done, or that had it done once and then skipped three years.
And between the two systems, our consistent experience in the bay is that Rust Check holds up better by the time the next season comes around. It tends to stay more fluid and present in seams and cavities. When we look at underbodies that have had Rust Check done properly and on schedule, there's usually still visible, active coverage. With vehicles that have had previous Krown treatments (not always, but often enough to notice) we sometimes find the product has dried and hardened more than we'd like, leaving a residue rather than the fluid, creeping protection this type of system is designed to provide.
Could that come down to application quality at a specific shop? Absolutely. But across the vehicles we see in our area, Rust Check is what we trust more consistently, and that's why we built our shop around it.
The Thing That Matters Most, Regardless of Brand
Here's the part we tell every customer who asks about this:
The most important factor is not which product you choose. It's whether the person applying it knows where rust actually starts on your vehicle, and whether they take the time to get there.
There are common spots on almost every vehicle that are rust-prone and easy to miss. Certain seams, areas behind wheel wells, spots on the frame where product washes away faster from highway spray, cavities that need to be hit from specific angles to actually get coverage inside. A good application means knowing those spots and spending extra time there.
We tell customers: if you go somewhere else for rust protection, we're not offended. The most important thing is that it gets done, and that it gets done properly every year. A vehicle that's had annual Krown treatments at a shop that does it right will be in far better shape than a vehicle that had one Rust Check treatment and nothing for three years after.
What to Look for in Any Rust Protection Shop
- Do they inspect before they apply? A quick look at your undercarriage before treatment tells you where rust is already starting and sets realistic expectations.
- Do they know your specific vehicle? Problem areas vary by make, model, and age. A shop that treats a Ram 1500 the same as a Civic isn't doing you any favours.
- Do they cover the areas that wash away? Certain spots, particularly along the underside of the frame and behind rear wheel wells, get hit hardest by road spray and need extra attention.
- Will they be honest about rust that's already there? Rust protection slows the process. It doesn't reverse it. If a shop tells you a spray will fix serious existing rust, find a different shop.
What to Expect When You Book with Us
When you bring your vehicle to Ultimate Detail & Rust Check in Bowmanville, we start with an inspection. Not a sales pitch, just an honest look at where your vehicle is at and where the vulnerable spots are for your specific make.
We apply Rust Check using the correct equipment and access points, and we take extra care in the areas we know get missed or wash away faster. We'll tell you what to expect afterward: a day or two of minor dripping as the product continues to work into seams, a brief smell that fades quickly, and when to come back.
And if your vehicle already has rust starting, we'll tell you that too, so you're not paying for protection under a false impression.
